It may shock you to learn that VCRs are still being made, but a company in Japan stuck to their guns and have been manufacturing the obsolete technology for years now. The end of that era has finally come for them as the end of this month marks when their VCR production line will finally close.
A Japanese company, which manufacturers a wide range of other electronics, will be making its last VCR at the end of August.
In a world of DVD and Blu-Ray players, Netflix and Youtube it’s hard to see why anyone would still want to own a VCR, but the Japanese company Funai Electric have been manufacturing them for import to China and the US for all these years. Funai are considered to be one of the largest producers of VCRs, having made their first in 1983 and at their peak selling up to 15 million units a month.
The reasons for stopping production are as you’d imagine; limited demand and difficulty in acquiring the right parts. And if you’re worried that the VCR will forever be forgotten, don’t worry just yet. You’ll still be able to find VHS tapes as their apparently pretty easy to find in Japanese stores and other parts of Asia.
